The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit
Understanding the Third Person of the Trinity as God with full personality, divine agency, supernatural power—and how He serves as your spiritual barometer for obedience

Most Christians talk about the Holy Spirit like He's an impersonal force—some vague power that occasionally shows up during worship services or prayer meetings. They treat Him like electricity: useful when you need it, mysterious in how it works, but ultimately just a tool to be accessed when convenient.
This catastrophic misunderstanding robs believers of the most intimate, practical, and transformative relationship available in this earthly realm. As Dr. Lester Sumrall taught through 65 years of global ministry spanning 110 countries, the Holy Spirit isn't an "it" or an influence—He's the Third Person of the Trinity, with all the attributes of personality, will, and divine agency. He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), resisted (Acts 7:51), lied to (Acts 5:3), and blasphemed (Matthew 12:31). These aren't characteristics of an impersonal force—they're the responses of a divine Person who actively engages with humanity.
Much of the theological foundation for understanding the Person of the Holy Spirit comes from Dr. Lester Sumrall's extensive biblical studies, though ultimately all credit goes to the Holy Spirit Himself for inspiring Scripture and revealing these truths to those who earnestly seek Him. Like Apostle Delmar Coward Jr., I've learned from Spirit-filled teachers who live in deep communion with the Holy Spirit. See: Lester Sumrall for more on his transformative ministry.
Part I: The Holy Spirit as Your Divine Barometer
Before diving into the full nature and work of the Holy Spirit, understand this critical truth for your daily walk: The Holy Spirit functions as your spiritual barometer, constantly revealing whether you're living in true obedience or merely performing religious activities. When His comforting voice seems distant, when His whispers become hard to hear, it's not because He's withdrawn—it's because you've drifted from the path you need to be walking.
The Divine Litmus Test
The Holy Spirit operates as the ultimate indicator of your spiritual alignment. Just as a barometer measures atmospheric pressure to predict weather changes, the Holy Spirit reveals the spiritual atmosphere of your life and warns of approaching storms.
When you're walking in obedience:
- His voice is clear and distinct (John 10:27: "My sheep hear My voice")
- Peace pervades even difficult circumstances (Romans 8:6: "To be spiritually minded is life and peace")
- Conviction is specific and leads to repentance, not condemnation (John 16:8)
- Fruit naturally develops in your character (Galatians 5:22-23)
- Boldness replaces fear in witnessing (Acts 1:8)
- Prayers flow with groaning too deep for words (Romans 8:26)
When you're walking in disobedience:
- His voice becomes muffled by the noise of compromise
- Anxiety and confusion cloud decision-making
- Guilt becomes vague and oppressive rather than redemptive
- Religious activity increases while spiritual fruit decreases
- Fear dominates your testimony
- Prayer becomes formal recitation rather than intimate communion
Isaiah 30:21 promises: "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it,' whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left." But this promise requires ears attuned through obedience. The Holy Spirit will not compete with willful rebellion—He's too gentle for that, too respectful of the free will God gave you.
Part II: Understanding the Person of the Holy Spirit
To truly recognize the Holy Spirit's role as your divine barometer, you must understand His nature as revealed throughout Scripture. The Bible mentions the Holy Spirit by name or reference over 500 times, revealing His essential character and work. Dr. Lester Sumrall emphasized that "one of the greatest needs of the Church today is to understand and possess a personal confrontation with the Holy Spirit who is known as the Third Person of the Trinity." These aren't abstract theological concepts but vital truths for daily Christian living.

He Is Fully God
The Holy Spirit possesses all the attributes of deity:
Omnipotence - He has unlimited power:
- Raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 8:11: "But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you...")
- Overshadowed Mary in the virgin birth (Luke 1:35: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you")
- Created the universe (Genesis 1:2: "The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters")
- Performs miracles (Romans 15:19: "In mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God")
Omniscience - He knows all things:
- Searches the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:10: "The Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God")
- Knows the mind of God (1 Corinthians 2:11: "No one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God")
- Reveals future events (John 16:13: "He will tell you things to come")
- Teaches all things (John 14:26: "The Holy Spirit...will teach you all things")
Omnipresence - He is everywhere simultaneously:
- Cannot be escaped (Psalm 139:7-10: "Where can I go from Your Spirit?")
- Dwells in all believers at once (1 Corinthians 3:16: "The Spirit of God dwells in you")
- Fills all creation (Jeremiah 23:24)
Eternality - He has always existed:
- Called the "eternal Spirit" (Hebrews 9:14)
- Present at creation (Genesis 1:2)
- Will exist forever (John 14:16: "He may abide with you forever")
He Has Personality
The Holy Spirit demonstrates all the attributes of personhood:
Mind - He thinks and knows:
- Romans 8:27: "He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is"
- 1 Corinthians 2:11: The Spirit comprehends divine thoughts
Will - He makes decisions:
- 1 Corinthians 12:11: "Distributing to each one individually as He wills"
- Acts 16:6-7: He forbade Paul from preaching in certain regions
Emotions - He feels:
- Ephesians 4:30: "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit"
- Isaiah 63:10: "They rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit"
- Romans 15:30: "Through the love of the Spirit"
He Acts as a Person
The Holy Spirit performs actions only a person can do:
He speaks:
- Acts 8:29: "Then the Spirit said to Philip, 'Go near and overtake this chariot'"
- Acts 10:19: "The Spirit said to him, 'Behold, three men are seeking you'"
- Acts 13:2: "The Holy Spirit said, 'Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul'"
- 1 Timothy 4:1: "The Spirit expressly says"
- Revelation 2:7: "What the Spirit says to the churches"
He teaches:
- Luke 12:12: "The Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say"
- John 14:26: "He will teach you all things"
- 1 Corinthians 2:13: "Which the Holy Spirit teaches"
He guides:
- John 16:13: "He will guide you into all truth"
- Romans 8:14: "As many as are led by the Spirit of God"
- Acts 16:6-7: Directing Paul's missionary journeys
He comforts:
- John 14:16: "Another Helper [Comforter]"
- Acts 9:31: "Walking in...the comfort of the Holy Spirit"
- John 14:26: "The Helper, the Holy Spirit"
He intercedes:
- Romans 8:26-27: "The Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered"
Part III: The Holy Spirit's Ongoing Work - Same Power as Acts
One of the most damaging lies that has infiltrated modern Christianity is cessationism—the belief that the miraculous gifts and supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit ended with the apostolic age. This doctrine makes God a respecter of persons, suggesting He loved the early church more than He loves us.
But Scripture declares the opposite. The Holy Spirit who fell at Pentecost is the same Holy Spirit available today with the same power, same gifts, and same supernatural manifestations:
The Promise is Perpetual
Acts 2:38-39: "Then Peter said to them, 'Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.'"
This promise isn't limited to the first century—it extends to:
- "Your children" - future generations
- "All who are afar off" - distant in time and geography
- "As many as the Lord our God will call" - throughout the entire church age
Jesus Himself promised: "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father" (John 14:12).
The Same Manifestations Continue
The Book of Acts records the normative Christian experience, not the exceptional:
Speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4, 10:46, 19:6):
- A sign to unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:22)
- Personal edification (1 Corinthians 14:4)
- Praying in the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:14-15)
- Evidence of Holy Spirit baptism (Acts 10:45-46)
Prophecy (Acts 2:17-18):
- "Your sons and daughters shall prophesy"
- "On My menservants and maidservants I will pour out My Spirit"
- 1 Corinthians 14:31: "You can all prophesy one by one"
Divine healing (Acts 3:6-8, 5:16, 8:7, 28:8):
- James 5:14-15 commands elders to pray for healing
- Mark 16:18: "They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover"
- 1 Corinthians 12:9: Gifts of healing still distributed
Miraculous signs (Acts 5:12, 6:8, 8:13):
- Mark 16:17-18: "These signs will follow those who believe"
- Hebrews 2:4: God bearing witness with "signs and wonders"
- 1 Corinthians 12:10: "Working of miracles"
Visions and dreams (Acts 2:17, 9:10, 16:9):
- Joel 2:28: Promise for the last days
- Still occurring today among believers worldwide
Part IV: The Holy Spirit as Director of This Dispensation
We're living in what theologians call the Dispensation of Grace or the Church Age—but more accurately, this is the Dispensation of the Holy Spirit. Just as the Father was prominent in the Old Testament and the Son during His earthly ministry, the Holy Spirit is the active director of God's work from Pentecost until Christ's return.
He Orchestrates the Church
The Holy Spirit isn't a junior partner in the Trinity—He's the executive director of Kingdom operations on Earth:
He appoints leadership:
- Acts 20:28: "The Holy Spirit has made you overseers"
- Acts 13:2: "The Holy Spirit said, 'Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul'"
- 1 Corinthians 12:28: Spiritual appointments in the church
He directs evangelism:
- Acts 8:29: Directing Philip to the Ethiopian
- Acts 10:19-20: Sending Peter to Cornelius
- Acts 16:6-7: Forbidding and allowing missionary work
He empowers witness:
- Acts 1:8: "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you"
- 1 Thessalonians 1:5: "Our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit"
- 1 Corinthians 2:4: "In demonstration of the Spirit and of power"
He reveals truth progressively:
- John 16:12-13: "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come..."
- 1 Corinthians 2:9-10: Revealing things "God has prepared for those who love Him"
- Ephesians 3:5: Mysteries "now revealed by the Spirit"
Part V: The Increasing Outpouring in the End Times
We're not in ordinary times—we're in the last days, characterized by an intensifying outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This isn't wishful thinking but biblical prophecy being fulfilled before our eyes.
Joel's Prophecy Being Fulfilled
Joel 2:28-32 and Acts 2:17-21 describe the end-times outpouring:
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh:
- Your sons and daughters shall prophesy
- Your young men shall see visions
- Your old men shall dream dreams
- On My menservants and maidservants I will pour out My Spirit
- They shall prophesy"
Note the universal scope—"all flesh," not just religious professionals. The Holy Spirit's work intensifies as we approach Christ's return, not diminishes.
Signs of Increased Outpouring
Global revivals breaking out simultaneously:
- Millions coming to Christ in Africa, Asia, and Latin America
- Underground church explosions in restricted nations
- Young people experiencing supernatural encounters
Restoration of gifts:
- Healing ministries multiplying worldwide
- Prophetic voices emerging with accuracy
- Miracles documented even in Western nations
- Speaking in tongues spreading across denominations
Increased spiritual hunger:
- People leaving dead religion for living relationship
- Seekers drawn to authentic supernatural Christianity
- Traditional churches experiencing renewal
Heightened spiritual warfare:
- Increased demonic activity and deception
- Greater need for discernment of spirits
- More dramatic deliverances occurring
The End-Times Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit has specific end-times functions:
Sealing believers (Ephesians 1:13, 4:30):
- Marking us for the day of redemption
- Guaranteeing our inheritance
- Protecting us from the mark of the beast
Restraining evil (2 Thessalonians 2:6-7):
- Holding back the full manifestation of lawlessness
- Will be "taken out of the way" before the Antichrist appears
- Currently limiting Satan's power
Preparing the Bride (Revelation 19:7-8, 22:17):
- Sanctifying the church for Christ's return
- "The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!'"
- Creating unity among true believers
Part VI: Finding and Staying in a Spirit-Filled Church
The church you attend profoundly impacts your relationship with the Holy Spirit. You need a church that doesn't just acknowledge the Holy Spirit doctrinally but actively operates in His power and presence.
Characteristics of a Truly Spirit-Led Church
Biblical foundations:
- Believes in the inerrancy and sufficiency of Scripture
- Preaches the full gospel including supernatural elements
- Recognizes Jesus as the only way, truth, and life (John 14:6)
- Affirms the Trinity with equal honor to each Person
Expectation of the supernatural:
- Believes miracles haven't ceased
- Regularly prays for healing and sees results
- Operates in spiritual gifts during services
- Testimonies of God's current activity, not just past stories
Authentic worship:
- Freedom for the Spirit to move, not rigid programs
- Spontaneous expressions alongside planned elements
- Tangible presence of God during gatherings
- People genuinely encountering God, not just singing songs
Spirit-led leadership:
- Leaders who demonstrate spiritual gifts
- Decisions made through prayer and fasting
- Humility and teachability, not authoritarian control
- Lives that demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit
Focus on relationship over religion:
- Emphasizes knowing God, not just knowing about Him
- Encourages personal devotion and hearing God's voice
- Discipleship that produces transformation
- Grace-based growth, not legalistic performance
Warning Signs of Spiritually Dead Churches
Avoid churches that:
- Deny the current operation of spiritual gifts
- Never see supernatural manifestations
- Explain away miracles with naturalistic reasoning
- Treat the Holy Spirit as an embarrassing relative
- Focus on human programs over divine presence
- Compromise biblical truth for cultural acceptance
- Display no fruit of genuine conversions or life change
The Early Church Model
The Book of Acts provides our template. The early church was characterized by:
Daily supernatural activity (Acts 2:43-47):
- "Many wonders and signs were done"
- "The Lord added to the church daily"
- Continuous fellowship and prayer
Spirit-directed decisions (Acts 13:1-3, 15:28):
- "As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said..."
- "It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us"
Power evangelism (Acts 8:4-8):
- Preaching accompanied by miracles
- Demons cast out publicly
- "Great joy in that city"
Ordinary believers doing extraordinary things (Acts 8:1-4, 11:19-21):
- Scattered believers preaching everywhere
- Not just apostles but all believers active
- The hand of the Lord with them
Part VII: Building Your Personal Relationship with the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit desires intimate fellowship with you. He's not seeking servants but friends, not workers but worshippers. Building this relationship requires intentionality and surrender.

Receiving the Holy Spirit
If you're born again, you have the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). But there's a difference between having the Spirit and being filled with the Spirit:
Initial receiving (at conversion):
- John 3:5-6: Born of the Spirit
- 1 Corinthians 12:13: Baptized into one body
- Ephesians 1:13: Sealed with the Holy Spirit
Baptism in the Holy Spirit (subsequent empowerment):
- Acts 1:5, 8: "You shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit...you shall receive power"
- Acts 8:14-17: Samaritans received the Spirit after believing
- Acts 19:1-6: Ephesian disciples received after believing
- Luke 11:13: "How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"
How to Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
-
Be born again - You must first belong to Christ (Romans 8:9)
-
Desire earnestly - 1 Corinthians 14:1: "Desire spiritual gifts"
-
Ask in faith - Luke 11:13: Simply ask the Father
-
Receive by faith - Mark 11:24: "Believe that you receive"
-
Yield your tongue - Acts 2:4: "Began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance"
-
Through laying on of hands - Acts 8:17, 19:6: Receive through another believer's ministry
-
During worship - Acts 10:44-46: While hearing the Word
Maintaining Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit
To keep the Holy Spirit as your accurate barometer:
Daily surrender:
- Romans 12:1: Present yourself as a living sacrifice
- Galatians 2:20: Crucified with Christ daily
- Luke 9:23: Take up your cross daily
Eliminate grieving Him:
- Ephesians 4:30-32: Avoid bitterness, anger, evil speaking
- 1 Thessalonians 5:19: "Do not quench the Spirit"
- Acts 7:51: Don't resist His leading
Cultivate spiritual disciplines:
- Jude 20: "Praying in the Holy Spirit"
- Ephesians 5:18-19: "Be filled with the Spirit"
- Galatians 5:16, 25: "Walk in the Spirit"
Obey immediately:
- Acts 5:32: "The Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him"
- James 1:22: Be doers, not just hearers
- Isaiah 1:19: "If you are willing and obedient"
This principle of obedience cannot be overstated. See: Obedience Is Everything for understanding why obedience is the single thread uniting all generals of faith and the key to supernatural authority.
Study the Word:
- Ephesians 6:17: "The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God"
- John 14:26: The Spirit brings Scripture to remembrance
- 2 Timothy 3:16: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God (literally "God-breathed")
The Holy Spirit's Voice: Learning to Recognize It
The ability to hear the Holy Spirit clearly is essential for every believer. Jesus said, "My sheep hear My voice" (John 10:27)—not "My mature sheep" or "My leadership sheep" but simply "My sheep."
How the Holy Spirit Speaks
Through Scripture:
- Hebrews 3:7: "As the Holy Spirit says"
- Specific verses illuminated for your situation
- Fresh revelation from familiar passages
Inner witness:
- Romans 8:16: "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit"
- Deep knowing beyond reasoning
- Peace or unrest about decisions
Audible inner voice:
- Acts 8:29: "The Spirit said to Philip"
- Clear thoughts that aren't your own
- Specific instructions or warnings
Through others:
- Acts 21:11: Agabus speaking by the Spirit
- Confirmation through multiple sources
- Prophetic words that resonate
Dreams and visions:
- Acts 2:17: "Your young men shall see visions"
- Joel 2:28: "Your old men shall dream dreams"
- Acts 16:9: Paul's Macedonian vision
Circumstances:
- Acts 16:6-7: Forbidden by the Spirit
- Doors opening or closing supernaturally
- Divine appointments and timing
Distinguishing His Voice
The Holy Spirit's voice has distinct characteristics:
Aligns with Scripture - He never contradicts the written Word Glorifies Jesus - John 16:14: "He will glorify Me" Produces peace - Even when challenging, brings ultimate peace Bears good fruit - Galatians 5:22-23: Love, joy, peace, etc. Confirmed by witnesses - 2 Corinthians 13:1: Two or three witnesses
The Seven Spirits of God: The Fullness of the Holy Spirit
Revelation speaks mysteriously of the "seven Spirits of God" (Revelation 1:4, 3:1, 4:5, 5:6). This doesn't mean seven different Holy Spirits but represents the complete, perfect manifestation of the one Holy Spirit. Isaiah 11:2 provides insight into this seven-fold anointing that rested on Christ and is available to us:
- The Spirit of the Lord - The sovereign presence and authority
- The Spirit of wisdom - Divine insight and application
- The Spirit of understanding - Comprehension of spiritual realities
- The Spirit of counsel - Guidance and direction
- The Spirit of might - Power for service and warfare
- The Spirit of knowledge - Revelation of God and His ways
- The Spirit of the fear of the Lord - Holy reverence and awe
This fullness is available to every believer who hungers for all God has.
The Holy Spirit and the End-Times Harvest
The Holy Spirit is orchestrating the greatest harvest of souls in human history as we approach Christ's return. This isn't happening through human programs but through supernatural demonstration:
Signs of the End-Times Harvest
Mass conversions:
- Entire villages turning to Christ
- Muslims seeing Jesus in dreams
- Atheists encountering the supernatural
- Young people abandoning secular materialism
Acceleration of ministry:
- What took decades now happens in years
- Instant deliverances and healings
- Rapid church multiplication
- Technology amplifying the gospel
Unity of true believers:
- Denominational walls breaking down
- Focus on Jesus rather than differences
- Combined prayer and worship movements
- Recognition of one Body, one Spirit
Increased persecution:
- Greater opposition to truth
- Legal restrictions on Christianity
- Social ostracization for biblical stands
- Physical persecution in many nations
The Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth
In an age of deception, the Holy Spirit stands as the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17, 15:26, 16:13). This role becomes increasingly critical as we navigate:
Spiritual deception:
- False prophets and false Christs (Matthew 24:24)
- Doctrines of demons (1 Timothy 4:1)
- Angel of light appearances (2 Corinthians 11:14)
Cultural confusion:
- Calling evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20)
- Gender confusion and sexual perversion
- Moral relativism and situational ethics
Religious counterfeits:
- Form of godliness without power (2 Timothy 3:5)
- Another Jesus, another spirit, another gospel (2 Corinthians 11:4)
- Mixture of truth with error
The Holy Spirit provides:
- Discernment of spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10)
- Recognition of truth versus error (1 John 4:1-6)
- Understanding of the times (1 Chronicles 12:32)
- Wisdom for navigation (James 1:5)
Living in Constant Communion
The goal isn't occasional encounters with the Holy Spirit but continuous communion. Paul commanded, "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and "Walk in the Spirit" (Galatians 5:16)—present tense, continuous action.

Practicing the Presence
Brother Lawrence called it "practicing the presence of God"—maintaining awareness of the Holy Spirit throughout your day:
Morning consecration:
- Acknowledge Him upon waking
- Invite Him into your day
- Surrender your agenda to His
Continuous conversation:
- Internal dialogue throughout tasks
- Asking for wisdom in decisions
- Thanking Him for His presence
Evening reflection:
- Review the day with Him
- Repent for grieving Him
- Thank Him for His faithfulness
Spontaneous worship:
- Singing in the Spirit (Ephesians 5:19)
- Praying in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:15)
- Silent adoration
Praying in Tongues: Strengthening Your Bond with the Holy Spirit
I believe that praying in tongues extensively—not just for a few minutes but for extended periods—dramatically strengthens your relationship with the Holy Spirit. This isn't just my opinion; it's something I'm discovering through personal experimentation.
When you pray in tongues, you bypass your intellect entirely. Your spirit communicates directly with God's Spirit without the filter of your limited understanding. Paul said, "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful" (1 Corinthians 14:14). This "unfruitfulness" of the mind is actually liberating—it means your prayers aren't limited by what you know or understand.
Why extended tongues builds intimacy:
- You're yielding control - Your mind can't edit or direct what's being said
- You're building spiritual muscle - Like physical exercise, longer sessions produce greater strength
- You're creating space for the Spirit - Without mental chatter, He has room to move
- You're demonstrating hunger - Extended prayer shows you want more than a casual relationship
- You're edifying yourself - "He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself" (1 Corinthians 14:4)
The great revivalists understood this. They didn't just speak in tongues occasionally—they made it a major part of their prayer life. Hours, not minutes. Daily, not weekly.
See: How Would Jesus Want Us To Worship? for my ongoing experiment with extended prayer, including praying in tongues for hours to see what opens up when we give the Holy Spirit the time He deserves.
Paul wished all believers spoke in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:5) and thanked God he spoke in tongues more than all the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 14:18). This wasn't casual use but extensive practice. If the apostle who wrote half the New Testament prioritized tongues this much, shouldn't we at least explore what happens when we do the same?
The Holy Spirit and Personal Transformation
The Holy Spirit's ultimate goal is conforming you to Christ's image (Romans 8:29). This transformation isn't behavioral modification but metamorphosis from within:
The Process of Transformation
Conviction of sin (John 16:8):
- Specific, not vague guilt
- Leading to repentance, not condemnation
- Producing freedom, not bondage
Renewal of mind (Romans 12:2):
- Changing thought patterns
- Replacing lies with truth
- Developing the mind of Christ
Heart circumcision (Romans 2:29):
- Removing callousness
- Increasing sensitivity
- Producing tenderness
Character development (Galatians 5:22-23):
- Fruit growing naturally
- Not striving but yielding
- Progressive maturation
The Warning: Don't Become Too Familiar
The greatest danger for Spirit-filled believers isn't losing the Holy Spirit but becoming too familiar with Him—taking His presence for granted, assuming His patience is unlimited, or treating His gifts casually.
Dangers of Familiarity
Presumption:
- Assuming He'll always respond the same way
- Taking liberties with grace
- Losing holy fear and reverence
Grieving Him (Ephesians 4:30):
- Persistent sin despite conviction
- Ignoring His warnings
- Quenching His manifestations
Losing sensitivity:
- His voice becoming background noise
- Missing divine appointments
- Spiritual dullness developing
Resisting Him (Acts 7:51):
- Rejecting His leading
- Preferring your plans
- Hardening your heart
Maintaining Fresh Encounter
Regular renewal:
- Fresh infilling (Ephesians 5:18)
- New levels of surrender
- Deeper consecration
Hunger and thirst:
- Never satisfied with yesterday's encounter
- Pressing in for more
- Desperate dependence
Childlike wonder:
- Amazement at His works
- Gratitude for His presence
- Joy in relationship
The Corporate Dimension: When the Body Gathers
The Holy Spirit manifests uniquely when believers gather in unity. There's an exponential increase in power when the Body comes together in the Spirit:
Corporate Anointing
Jesus' promise (Matthew 18:19-20):
- "Where two or three gather in My name"
- Agreement brings answered prayer
- His presence specially manifested
Pentecost pattern (Acts 2:1-4):
- "They were all with one accord"
- Corporate waiting and worship
- Simultaneous filling
Multiplication of power (Leviticus 26:8):
- One chases a thousand
- Two put ten thousand to flight
- Corporate authority increases
Creating Space for Corporate Move
Extended worship:
- Not rushed or programmed
- Allowing His presence to build
- Responding to His leading
Prophetic flow:
- Multiple people prophesying
- Interpretation of tongues
- Words of knowledge operating
Ministry time:
- Laying on of hands
- Corporate prayer for needs
- Testimonies of His works
Holy Spirit sovereignty:
- Agenda flexibility
- Pastor/leaders yielding control
- Unexpected movements allowed
The Holy Spirit and the Fear of the Lord
One of the seven spirits (Isaiah 11:2) is the Spirit of the fear of the Lord—a crucial aspect often missing in modern Christianity. This isn't terror but awesome reverence that produces:
Holiness:
- 2 Corinthians 7:1: "Perfecting holiness in the fear of God"
- Hatred of sin
- Pursuit of purity
Wisdom:
- Proverbs 9:10: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom"
- Proper perspective
- Right decisions
Protection:
- Proverbs 14:27: "The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life"
- Kept from evil
- Divine covering
Intimacy:
- Psalm 25:14: "The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him"
- Deeper revelation
- Closer relationship
The Promise of Greater Things
Jesus made an astounding promise: "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father" (John 14:12).
This wasn't hyperbole—it was prophecy. Through the Holy Spirit, believers would:
- Reach more people than Jesus did physically
- Perform miracles globally, not just locally
- See greater manifestations of power
- Experience deeper revelations
- Walk in higher authority
The "greater works" are happening now and will intensify as we approach Christ's return. The Holy Spirit is preparing a glorious Church, without spot or wrinkle, demonstrating God's wisdom to principalities and powers.
Your Response: Total Surrender
The Holy Spirit as your divine barometer only functions accurately when you're fully surrendered. Partial obedience creates static, compromise clouds clarity, and rebellion removes His witness entirely.
The call is clear:
"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25).
This isn't an option for super-saints—it's the normal Christian life. Anything less is subnormal, substandard, and grieves the Holy Spirit who sealed you for redemption.
Make this your daily prayer:
"Holy Spirit, I recognize You as God—equal with the Father and Son. I surrender completely to Your leadership. Be my teacher, guide, comforter, and power source. Sensitize me to Your voice. Use me for Your glory. Keep me in the center of Your will. Let me never grieve, quench, or resist You. Fill me afresh today. In Jesus' name, Amen."
The Urgency of the Hour
We're not in ordinary times. The Holy Spirit is moving with increasing intensity because the King is coming soon. The harvest is ripe, laborers are few, and time is short.
This is why you must:
- Find a Spirit-filled church immediately
- Seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit if you haven't
- Develop sensitivity to His voice daily
- Walk in obedience moment by moment
- Expect supernatural manifestations regularly
- Share testimony of His works boldly
The Holy Spirit isn't preparing a defeated Church barely hanging on until rescue. He's preparing a victorious Bride who has made herself ready, clothed in righteous acts, walking in supernatural power, bringing in the final harvest.
Your spiritual barometer—the Holy Spirit—is calling you higher. The question isn't whether He's speaking; it's whether you're listening and obeying.
The dispensation of the Holy Spirit is reaching its climax. The same power that fell at Pentecost is available now—actually, greater manifestations are promised for these last days.
Don't settle for powerless Christianity. Don't accept cessationist theology that makes God a respecter of persons. Don't grieve the Holy Spirit by treating Him as optional equipment rather than essential Person.
He is God. He is here. He is speaking. He is moving.
And He's inviting you into the greatest adventure possible—walking in the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit as the world grows darker and the Church grows brighter, until that glorious moment when the Spirit and the Bride say with united voice, "Come, Lord Jesus!"
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams." — Acts 2:17
The Holy Spirit is your divine barometer—when His presence feels distant, check your obedience. When His voice seems silent, examine your walk. He hasn't withdrawn; you've wandered. Return, repent, and be refilled. The greatest days of Holy Spirit power are ahead, not behind.
