The Window Before The Grid

With gratitude to a sister in Christ who put this framing directly in front of me after the AITX Dallas kickoff and asked me to go deeper on it.

A friend flagged something for me the morning after an event in Dallas. She pointed at Revelation 13, verses 14 through 18. The beast. The image. The mark on the right hand or forehead. The number. Her read was blunt: the system for fulfilling this prophecy is probably already assembling, the rollout to the general population is likely within the next decade, and the window where the faithful can still operate freely in markets is going to close.

She also named something I needed to hear. The work of empowering ordinary people and particularly Christians with AI tools is not optional right now. It is a race against a specific closing door. When the day comes that the global grid will not allow believers to function without an allegiance they cannot give, the Christians who have already built capability and already built resourced community will be the ones who walk through what comes next without compromise.

She is right. The urgency of the work I am doing, and that many of you are doing, is not primarily an AI-race urgency. It is a Revelation 13 urgency. There is a window, and the window is open right now, and what we build and who we equip during this window is going to matter enormously for the generation of Christians who have to live through what comes next.

Let me walk the argument.

The Text

Revelation 13:16-18, KJV:

"And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."

Three things to notice before we say anything about timing.

First, the mark is a counterfeit of the seal of God. Deuteronomy 6:8 told Israel to bind God's word on the hand and between the eyes. Revelation 7:3 describes the 144,000 sealed in their foreheads by God. Revelation 22:4, at the final consummation, says the saints will see God's face and his name shall be in their foreheads. Same body locations every time. The forehead is what you confess. The hand is what you do. The mark of the beast is the satanic inversion of God's seal on His people: an alternate allegiance worn in the same spots, demanded by a counterfeit authority.

Second, the lever is commerce, not violence. "No man might buy or sell." The beast's primary weapon is economic exclusion. You do not get jailed for refusing the mark in this passage. You get cut out of the market. You cannot work, you cannot transact, you cannot participate. That is how the system coerces mass compliance: by making refusal look like starvation.

Third, the imagery presupposes a coordinated enforcement system. "He causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond" to submit. This is not a local ordinance. It is globally applied. In the first century, that scale of universal commercial coordination was only locally approximated, through things like the imperial cult certificates that Christians had to refuse to trade in certain Asia Minor cities. Full global enforcement of market-exclusion on ideological grounds was impossible.

That is what has changed.

Three Ways Christians Have Read This

I want to be honest about the interpretive landscape before I make my claim, because the church has not agreed on when or how Revelation 13 gets fulfilled.

The preterist reading says the primary fulfillment happened in the first century. The beast is imperial Rome, backed by the religious authority of the imperial cult. The number 666, decoded through Hebrew gematria, spells Nero Caesar. The mark was participation in emperor worship via the certificates of sacrifice required to conduct certain kinds of commerce in the Roman provinces. Christians who refused the cult found themselves pushed to the margins of public life, sometimes violently. In this reading, John was describing the persecution his own people were already under.

The idealist reading says the pattern is timeless. Wherever a political-religious system demands allegiance as a condition of participation in the economy, that is Revelation 13 operating. It has had partial fulfillments in every generation and culminates in a final globally-coordinated version at the end of history.

The futurist reading says there is a literal, specific end-times fulfillment still to come. The beast is a coming Antichrist figure. The mark is a specific technology yet to deploy. The events of Revelation 13 will be recognizable and public when they happen.

My own reading is the idealist one with a futurist tail. The pattern has been operating for two thousand years in local and partial forms. What is new is that the capacity for a global, automated, universally-enforceable version is now within technological reach for the first time in human history. That is the piece my friend put her finger on. The prophecy is the same. The machine that could implement it exists now in a way it never has before.

The Proto-Marks Are Already Here

Before we talk about the end state, let me point at what already exists.

Banking access is already ideologically conditional for specific populations. Sanctioned individuals, certain political dissidents, entire debanked categories of legal businesses (sex workers, some cannabis businesses, some crypto businesses, some political organizations) already know what it feels like to not be able to buy or sell through the normal rails. A Nigerian pastor or a Canadian trucker or a Russian artist learns very quickly that "just use your bank" is not a universal right. It is a conditional privilege that depends on the grid's permission.

Central bank digital currencies are being deployed. CBDCs with programmable money features allow governments to decide in advance what a given unit of currency can and cannot be spent on, by whom, when. The Chinese digital yuan is already operational. The euro digital is in pilot. The dollar digital has been live-tested. The pitch is always consumer convenience. The capability delivered is absolute transactional surveillance and programmable veto.

Biometric ID systems are being normalized. India's Aadhaar covers over 1.3 billion people and is increasingly required to access basic services. Worldcoin is capturing iris scans in exchange for crypto. Airports have moved to facial recognition boarding. Biometrics are the substrate on which a non-removable, non-transferable personal ID layer can be built.

Social credit scoring has been tested at scale. China's system is the most famous. It is not the only one. Insurance premiums priced against behavioral data, employment screening against social media histories, platform deplatforming that cascades across providers: these are social credit in function under different names. Behavior feeds score feeds access.

AI-mediated gatekeeping is the new frontier. When an AI system silently filters who sees what, who can publish, who gets verified, who gets banned, and whose payments clear, the mark does not need to be a literal mark. It becomes a score in a database, updated in real time, checked at every transaction, invisible to the bearer, irrevocable from outside the system.

None of this is Revelation 13 in its final form. All of it is the infrastructure that would be required to implement Revelation 13 in its final form. The distance between "sanctioned entity cannot use SWIFT" and "this person's beliefs disqualify them from the grid" is a policy decision. The rails are already built.

The Prophetic Echo In The Culture

I want to flag something most readers will have missed.

In 2021, on his Donda album, Kanye West released a song called "Off The Grid." The chorus:

We off the grid, grid, grid
This for my kid, kid, kid
For when my kid-kid-kids have kids
Everything we did for the crib

That is a generational-sovereignty declaration from one of the most influential cultural voices of this century, set to a track that hit number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sit with that for a second.

Then listen for this line, halfway through Ye's verse:

Tattoo in my face is the mark of truth
Gotta watch what you say when they market you

Mark of truth juxtaposed against "when they market you." A visible mark on the face set against the economic gatekeeping of being marketed. That is the Revelation 13 / Revelation 22:4 pattern compressed into two bars of rap. The saints in Revelation 22:4 have the Father's name in their foreheads, the mark of truth. The beast in Revelation 13 controls who can buy or sell, the market.

The rest of the verse stacks the theology:

I got this God power, that's my leverages
I got this Holy Water, that's my beverages
I gotta stay with God where the blessings is
I talk to God everyday, that's my bestie

Translation: divine leverage over worldly leverage. Covenant resource over market resource. Intimacy with God over entertainment with the crowd. And the central move: we off the grid.

I do not think Ye wrote this song thinking "I am scripting a Revelation 13 song for my generation." I think the Holy Spirit was moving through a creative who was in a season of spiritual hunger during the making of Donda, and a piece of what came out is a prophecy dressed as a hit record. God does this. He seeds the cultural imagination of a generation through unlikely channels before He fully explains what He is doing. The first people to feel a shift are often the poets and the musicians, not the theologians.

Two observations matter for our purposes.

First, the fact that "Off The Grid" became a hit means the cultural body already knows. Beneath the conscious layer, a lot of people sense that a grid is forming and that getting off of it is becoming a live question. They do not have the Scripture yet. They have a song with a hook that will not leave their heads. The Church's job is to give them the Scripture that explains what their spirit was already responding to.

Second, "this for my kid, kid, kid" is exactly the time horizon we should be operating on. Not me this year. Not my company this quarter. My kid's kid's kids. The generational faithfulness horizon is the one that actually matches the scale of what is being built against the faithful. The grid is a multi-decade consolidation project. The answer is a multi-generational covenant project.

The Spirit is moving through the culture faster than most pulpits are catching up. The hit song is often the early warning system. Those with ears to hear, hear.

Why The Window Matters

Now we can say what window my friend was naming.

Right now, in April 2026, a few things are simultaneously true:

  • Markets are still largely open. You can open a business, accept payments, hire contractors, publish writing, build software, and reach customers without ideological pre-approval, at least in most Western jurisdictions, at least for now.
  • AI capability is being democratized faster than it is being consolidated. For the first time since the printing press, ordinary people can wield tools that used to be the exclusive province of large institutions. The window where that democratization stays democratized is not permanent. The consolidators are working on closing it.
  • Christian communities are free to organize, resource, teach, and build. The friction is social and cultural, not yet legal or economic in most places. You can still plant a church, run a home, teach your children, and hold property without conditional ideological compliance.
  • The rails of the coming grid are still incomplete and unconnected. CBDCs are not fully deployed. Biometric ID is not fully universal. Social credit is not yet formally binding in the West. AI-mediated gatekeeping is not yet total.

What the framing points at is that all four of those conditions are eroding on the same timeline. The window is open but it is closing. The operative question for the faithful is not will the grid close? It is what do we do with the window we have?

What To Do In The Window

There are two moves, and they are complementary.

Move 1: Equip The Faithful While The Tools Are Free

This is the work I have been doing with Applied AI Society and with the broader project of personal agentic operating systems. AI literacy is not a luxury. It is the single most load-bearing sovereignty skill of the coming decade. The person who knows how to wield modern AI can produce an order of magnitude more than an unaided person. The person who does not will be outcompeted by those who do. If the faithful close the hyperagency gap now, we enter the harder window with maximum leverage. If we do not, we enter it with maximum vulnerability.

This is not about building billion-dollar companies. It is about making sure the pastor, the teacher, the mother, the tradesman, and the small-business owner in the pew next to you can deploy the same class of tools that the centralized machine is deploying against them. This is also the deeper logic of The Genesis Layer. The technological substrate that collapses intent into reality is here. The obedient who use it under God's direction gain disproportionate kingdom leverage right now, while that advantage is still available.

More subtly, every Christian who gets AI-literate during the window becomes permanently harder to control. If you know how to run models locally, operate your own agents, and build your own tools, the grid cannot cut you off from capability in the way it can cut off a pure consumer. Tool-building Christians are hard to deplatform from their own work. That is a structural sovereignty gain that compounds.

Move 2: Resource The Communities Before The Grid Closes

This is the part my friend named explicitly. When the grid closes to the faithful, the Christians who can still eat, drink, work, worship, and raise children are going to be the Christians who already built resourced communities before they had to. Land. Food. Water. Energy. Shelter. Skills. Trusted humans in close geographic proximity.

This is covenant preparedness, a different posture from prepper paranoia. The early Christians in Jerusalem sold their possessions and held things in common (Acts 2:44-45) because they understood they were a people-in-common first and individuals second. The monastic movements of the third and fourth centuries built resilient rural communities because they saw the pattern and moved in advance of the collapse.

What this looks like in practice right now is not one thing. For some Christians it is buying land and learning to farm. For others it is investing deeply in a specific church and physical neighborhood instead of optimizing for career mobility. For others it is building mesh networks and local food supply chains and local fabrication capacity. For others it is the sovereignty stack for digital life: owning your tools, your data, your identity, your AI.

The shape varies. The posture is the same: reduce your dependency on the exact systems that Revelation 13 says will be weaponized against the faithful.

This is also why I keep insisting that the narrow path has to be walked joyfully, with people, in place. Revelation describes the faithful remnant as a people. Plural. Sealed on their foreheads with the name of God. Singing a new song. Standing with the Lamb. The unit of survival is the covenant community. A lone believer with a bug-out bag misses the whole shape of what God is preserving.

The Final Reversal

There is a detail I do not want anyone to miss.

The Bible's first instruction about binding something on the hand and forehead appears in Exodus and Deuteronomy. It is the Shema. "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord." That command is the original. It predates the book of Revelation by more than a thousand years. The mark of the beast is the counterfeit. The Shema is the original. God designed His people to be marked, outwardly and inwardly, with His own word. The enemy is always running a counterfeit of what God does.

And the passage that resolves Revelation 13 is not in Revelation 13. It is in Revelation 22:4.

"And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads."

In the New Jerusalem, at the end of all things, the forehead that the beast demanded for his mark is revealed to belong, finally and permanently, to God. The name in the forehead is the Father's, not the counterfeit's. The grid that tried to exclude the faithful is itself excluded from the city. The saints who refused the mark reign with Christ (Revelation 20:4). The economy that ran on the mark is burned. The Bride of Christ, marked with God's name on her very body, walks into eternity with the Lamb.

This is why the window matters but it is not the ultimate story. The ultimate story is that the mark gets reversed. God's name displaces the counterfeit. The saints who held the line during the exclusionary window are the ones with the best seat at the feast.

Neither Doomer Nor Denier

I want to close by drawing a line I have drawn before and will keep drawing.

The temptation on one side is to lean into end-times panic. To hoard. To isolate. To treat every news cycle like the seventh trumpet. That is not what Revelation asks of the faithful. It explicitly asks for patience and faith (Revelation 13:10, 14:12). Panic is not a biblical posture. Neither is cynicism.

The temptation on the other side, which is more common in comfortable Western Christianity, is to treat Revelation 13 as metaphor emptied of all practical force. To assume that the system which gave us democracy and supermarkets is the system God will preserve indefinitely. To laugh off anyone who notices the proto-marks. That is also not what Scripture asks. It says these things will come. The only question for every generation is whether its particular instance is the one.

The middle way is covenant urgency. Take the text seriously. Notice the infrastructure. Use the window. Equip the faithful. Resource the communities. Walk obediently. Trust that the One who wrote the story also wrote the ending, and the ending is the Lamb's, not the beast's.

What that means for me right now is simple:

  • I am going to keep building Applied AI Society, because equipping Christians with AI literacy during the open window is one of the most load-bearing things I can do.
  • I am going to keep investing in resourced Christian community, because the faithful remnant is always a people in covenant with each other, never a scattered set of individuals.
  • I am going to keep making God my best friend, because the only actual protection through any tribulation window, small or large, is the One who seals His people Himself.
  • And I am going to keep saying this clearly to anyone who will listen, because some of you reading this will be the ones who build what the next generation needs to walk through what is coming.

The sister who walked me through this said it clean. The system for fulfilling this prophecy is probably already here. The rollout is on a timeline shorter than most Christians are budgeting for. What you are doing with AI right now matters because the window is open and it will not be open forever.

Use the window.

"Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus." — Revelation 14:12

"And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads." — Revelation 22:4
